Tavira is one of the most architecturally attractive towns in the Algarve in the south of Portugal. Renowned for its Moorish architecture, this coastal city can trace its origins back to around 2,000 years BC. Although quieter than other resort towns in the Algarve, the array of Tavira Hotels bare testimony to the growing importance of Tavira as a tourist destination.
Historically, during the occupation by the Moors in the 13th century, Tavira was a very important town due to its fishing industry. In the 17th century, its importance grew as a port for shipping produce such as salt, dried fish and wine. In 1755, along with much of the Algarve, most of the town was destroyed by an earthquake. The town was subsequently rebuilt and today boasts many fine 18th century buildings along with 37 churches and a Roman Bridge that links the two parts of the town across the River Gilão. Other tourist attractions include Moirisco Castle and Santa Maria do Castelo Church. Fairs and markets, wonderful shops and restaurants in Tavira provide plenty of entertainment and a taste of the true Algarve. No longer economically reliant on tuna fishing due to changes in their migration patterns, Tavira is now more reliant of the tourist industry.
Tavira is a wonderful all year round tourist destination as, like the rest of the Algarve, the weather is mild with little rainfall and plenty of sunshine. The summers are hot and sunny with little rain as much of the rain falls in the cooler winter months. The evenings in the autumn and winter months are cool so guests need to remember to bring some warmer clothes with them.
The architecture of Tavira Hotels differs considerable. Pousada de Tavira is a former 16th century convent that boasts 16thand 17th century Renaissance architecture while the Vila Galé Albacora is a converted former tuna factory with stunning architecture typical of the south of Portugal. Others with stark white walls and bold lines are reminiscent of the Arabian heritage and culture of the region.
